A morning cycle through the villages beside the lagoon is a unique way to take in a sampling of village life. You will get a sore arm from waving to the kids and shouting "bye-bye" in response to their excited calls. Depending on the day there may be opportunities to interact with a women's weaving group, join a game of Kilikiti or just pass the time of day with curious villagers who are keen to talk.
It is actually cooler to ride than walk at this location, as the breeze is remarkably cooling.
At the end of the lagoon ride, there is a steep climb over the saddle. The eBikes make easy work of this or you can test your fitness with a regular bike or take the escorted package and get a lift over the hill.
The giant clams are located in the lagoon about 50m offshore, in about two metres of sheltered water, and are easily reached from a sandy shore. For me these 70cm long molluscs are on a par with seeing manta rays and more spectacular than the giant turtles.
The clams can only be visited within 3 hours of high tide so start times may vary. The clam reserve is closed on Sundays.
